free throws and referees
went to the Grizzlies home opener against the Knicks. i didn't have high hopes, but i figured they would win. well, they started off good with 3 Mike Miller 3-pointers and some good defense. soon, that would all change and they stayed behind until the 4th quarter...a lot of people left after the 3rd quarter, but i am sure that they regret that, now.
the griz finally caught up and ended up forcing 3, yes 3 overtimes. we finally gave up and left after the second overtime because it was about 10:20 and we knew that by the time we got to our car and drove home, it would be about 11:00. we're not night owls and we still had some laundry to put up at the house. as we were pulling out of the parking garage at "parking can be fun", our favorite garage in Memphis, we heard them say that the grizzlies were ahead by 1. the knicks got the ball back and as quinton richardson travels, they call a foul on a grizzlies player. the commentator was going crazy and you could hear the fans boo as they showed the replay. fortunately, the grizzlies still had a chance to come back again, but they were not able to this time. knicks win.
so who is to blame for this loss? anyone from the grizzlies that shot a free throw and the referees who called the game. this game should have been over after the first quarter. a lot of the calls went to the knicks and should have gone the other way...i'm sure it may have evened out, but the wrong calls happened at the wrong time. especially the call at the end of the game. if these calls had been called correctly, then they might have kept the rhythm...and then when they got the chance to shoot free throws, they missed most of them. it wasn't just the rookies missing, in fact, the rookies did very well...it was the veterans missing shots, Mike Miller and Chucky Atkins.
in the refs' defense, they can't catch everything, BUT, maybe they'll called them a little to quickly and confidently. one new rule i was not aware of was that the players aren't aloud to talk a lot during the game...if they talk back to the refs or players they might end up with a technical foul...the knicks ended up with 3 of them! so that was cool.
overall, it was a great game. we had some decent seats on the front row of the upper bowl. the crowd got into the game and the rookies looked really good. Rudy Gay will be good if they give him the ball more. same for Kyle Lowry. Big Jake has taken some steps backwards from where he was last year and Lawrence Roberts just hasn't had enough playing time, i guess...he looked lost out there and made some bad decisions. once everyone is healthy, Stro and Pau, then they might have the leadership they need to be a great team...the players and coaches are still trying figure out who works best where.
