here "wii" go
okay, that's a stupid name for this entry, but it's the best i can come up with. if you didn't know, the Nintendo Wii (pronounced "wee") was released a couple of weeks ago. and if you're not familiar with this new video game system, let me tell you a little about it.
you now have 2 controllers, as if 10 buttons on one controller wasn't enough to figure out. the controllers are movement activated during the games that you play. for instance, to play the tennis game, you hold one of the controllers like a tennis racket and swing away. or for a shoot-em-up war game, you might simulate a throwing action with the controller when throwing a hand grenade. this particular controller is called the "nunchuck", and rightly so because it is basically a stick with some buttons and a cord attached to another controller. the other controller looks more like a Super Nintendo controller, so nothing really new there.
i just read a blog entry on crave.cnet.com and they were talking about the beginning of the "Wii Disaster Watch". i thought that at first they were talking about a new problem with the system, but it turns out that people are posting videos of people using the Wii. just imagine what it must look like to "pretend" you are playing tennis or throwing a football. and imagine what might happen if you run into things in your house or hit something on a table. we have youtube.com blocked here at work, so i'll have to wait until i get home to check out the videos.
all that being said, i don't think i'll be purchasing the Wii. for one, i usually buy new systems when they are a couple of years old and the price has come down quite a bit...i don't have that much time to justify spending the money. secondly, the reason i play video games is to relax. i don't want to be moving around a lot...i might get hurt or tired. this point is good for kids, though...at least they won't be sitting around playing video games anymore...i have read that the new Playstation 3 has movement activated controls as well. lastly, my wife would find yet another reason to laugh at me. nuff said.
one cool thing i did hear about the Wii is that online play is free if you already have broadband internet. the other systems, PS2 and XBOX, require you to pay a monthly fee.
